India’s BaaS EV Trend: MG Ahead, Tata and Maruti Close Behind
Battery-as-a-Service (BaaS) is gradually reshaping India’s electric vehicle market. Instead of purchasing the battery along with the car, customers can choose a subscription-based model where they pay a per-kilometre fee. This significantly reduces the upfront ex-showroom price, making EVs more accessible to a larger audience. While the running cost increases slightly, the lower entry barrier is driving stronger adoption.
Currently, multiple EVs in India are offered with BaaS pricing, with MG leading the segment, followed by Tata and Maruti strengthening their positions.

Why MG Leads the BaaS EV Segment
MG dominates the BaaS segment with three models — Comet EV, Windsor EV, and ZS EV. By aggressively adopting the subscription model early, MG has positioned itself as a leader in flexible EV ownership.
Tata is expanding its presence with the Punch EV, while Maruti’s entry with the e Vitara signals growing mainstream acceptance of the BaaS model.
The Road Ahead
Battery subscription models address major EV concerns such as high upfront costs and long-term battery health. As charging infrastructure improves and competition intensifies, BaaS could play a critical role in accelerating EV adoption in India.
With MG ahead and Tata and Maruti close behind, India’s BaaS EV market is poised for rapid growth in the coming years.
