Maruti Suzuki India retained its crown as India’s top carmaker, registering 189,665 units in total sales for September 2025. The company, however, faced contrasting dynamics within its portfolio. Domestic passenger vehicle sales dropped by 8 per cent, totaling 132,820 units, primarily due to slowing demand in entry-level and utility vehicles. On the other hand, exports surged 52 per cent year-on-year to reach an all-time high of 42,204 units.
Festive buying boosted overall momentum, with 1.65 lakh deliveries completed during Navratri’s first week alone. Despite temporary slowdowns in specific categories, Maruti’s ability to sustain leadership amidst changing demand trends highlights its unmatched presence in India’s car market.
September 2025 was monumental for Tata Motors, which recorded its highest-ever monthly sales of 60,907 units, a staggering 47 per cent year-on-year growth. This performance cemented Tata’s place as India’s second-largest carmaker. The Tata Nexon was the star performer, contributing over 22,500 units a new record for any single Tata model to date.
Tata’s consistent focus on sustainable mobility also paid off. Its EV portfolio nearly doubled sales to 9,191 units, while CNG variants crossed 17,800 units. This balanced mix across petrol, diesel, CNG, and electric segments reflects Tata’s strategic foresight and deep understanding of India’s evolving car market.

Hyundai Motor India sustained its upward trajectory with 70,347 units sold in total registering a 10 per cent year-on-year increase. Domestic sales accounted for 51,547 units, while exports rose sharply by 44 per cent to 18,800 units.
Hyundai’s SUVs continued to dominate the brand’s success. SUVs represented a record 72.4 per cent of total sales. The Creta achieved its highest-ever monthly sales at 18,861 units, and the Venue followed closely with a 20-month high of 11,484 units. The growing preference for premium and feature-rich SUVs helped Hyundai strengthen its stronghold in the competitive Indian market.
Mahindra & Mahindra posted a healthy 16 per cent year-on-year growth in total sales, reaching 100,298 units in September 2025. This was powered by massive demand for its SUV range, which contributed 56,233 units to the total. The company’s exports also grew by 43 per cent, hitting 4,320 units during the month.
Mahindra’s dominance in the SUV category remains unshaken, thanks to popular models like the XUV700, Scorpio-N, and Bolero Neo. Its blend of design, durability, and power continues to attract both urban and rural consumers, keeping the brand firmly among India’s top carmakers.
Other automakers experienced a blend of highs and lows during September 2025, reflecting the market’s diverse consumer trends.

The implementation of GST 2.0 played a pivotal role in boosting consumer confidence. Simplified pricing structures and lower tax complexities helped increase transparency for buyers. Coupled with festive excitement, the automotive sector witnessed heightened footfall and higher conversion rates.
During the first week of Navratri alone, the industry delivered over 1.65 lakh cars, making it one of the most active festive starts in recent years. Tata’s rise to the No. 2 position and Maruti’s continued dominance marked September 2025 as a turning point for India’s auto landscape.
