Wagon R Crosses 10 Million Global Sales, India Drives One-Third of Total

Wagon R Global Sales Cross 10 Million Units

Suzuki Motor Corporation has announced that the Wagon R series has surpassed 10 million cumulative global sales as of June 2025. The milestone was reached 31 years and 9 months after its launch in Japan in September 1993. Known for its practicality, spaciousness, and ease of use, the Wagon R has been sold in over 75 countries, with India emerging as its largest market.

India’s Major Contribution to Wagon R’s Success

Of the 10 million units sold globally, India accounts for approximately 3.41 million units, representing a 34% share. This includes 1.19 million units of the third-generation Wagon R, launched in January 2019. A significant number of made-in-India Wagon Rs have also been exported.

Origins and Evolution of the Wagon R

The Wagon R was initially developed as a semi-bonnet-style hatchback, designed to be comfortable and easy to use. Beyond Japan, it has been manufactured in India, Hungary, Indonesia, and other regions, evolving to suit local needs. Examples include the Wagon R CNG in India and the Wagon R Smile with sliding doors in Japan.

Wagon R India’s Best-Selling Passenger Vehicle

Since FY2022, the Maruti Wagon R has been India’s top-selling passenger car. It is currently available with 1.0-litre and 1.2-litre petrol engines, along with CNG options. Despite a slight decline in sales in recent years, it continues to be one of Maruti Suzuki’s strongest performers.

Annual Sales Performance

In FY2025, Maruti Suzuki sold 198,451 Wagon Rs in India, a 1% drop from FY2024’s 200,177 units. The model also topped sales charts in FY2023 (212,340 units) and FY2022 (188,837 units).

Long-Standing Presence in India

Launched in December 1999, the Wagon R has been in the Indian market for nearly 26 years, joining the ranks of long-surviving models like the Honda City and Mercedes-Benz E-Class. From its launch until June 2025, the Wagon R has sold an estimated 3.41 million units in India.

Third-Generation Wagon R Impact

Introduced in January 2019, the third-generation Wagon R began as a 1.0-litre petrol variant, later expanding to include CNG and 1.2-litre petrol versions. It quickly became one of Maruti Suzuki’s best-selling CNG vehicles. By June 2025, it had sold 1,199,024 units in India, making up nearly 12% of global Wagon R sales.

Recent Quarterly Performance

Between April and June 2025 (Q1 FY2026), the Wagon R sold 40,292 units in India, down 13% from the same period in the previous fiscal year. During this quarter, it ranked as the third best-selling passenger car after the Maruti Dzire and Maruti Swift, and seventh overall when including SUVs and vans.

Wagon R’s Role in Maruti Suzuki’s Market Leadership

The Wagon R, along with newer SUV offerings, has been instrumental in maintaining Maruti Suzuki’s position as India’s leading passenger vehicle manufacturer. Its versatility, fuel options, and practicality continue to appeal to a wide range of customers.
