5 Things You Didn’t Know About the New Renault Duster
The upcoming Renault Duster is set to make a strong comeback in India with a rugged design, improved technology, and better performance. While most buyers notice its bold styling and SUV stance first, there are several interesting engineering details behind the scenes that make the new Duster even more impressive.
Here are five lesser-known facts about the new Renault Duster that many people might not know.
1. It Doesn’t Use Renault’s Global Platform
Globally, the new Duster is built on Renault’s CMF-B platform. However, the India-bound version will be based on the RGMP platform, which has been developed keeping Indian road conditions and market requirements in mind.
This platform focuses on durability and flexibility and can support vehicles ranging from sub-4 metre models to vehicles up to 4.7 metres in length. It can also support different body styles like compact SUVs, mid-size SUVs, MPVs and even sedans, along with seating layouts for five, six or seven passengers.
2. Designed to Support Multiple Powertrains
One of the biggest advantages of the new platform is its ability to support multiple powertrain technologies.
The new Duster can accommodate:
- Petrol (ICE)
- Electric (EV)
- CNG
- Flex-fuel
It can also work with 2WD, 4WD and even electric all-wheel drive (e-4WD). This flexibility allows Renault to adapt the SUV for future technologies and regulations.
The Turbo 160 petrol engine uses dual injection technology, which injects fuel twice during the combustion cycle. This helps improve both performance and fuel efficiency while preparing the engine for future BS7 emission norms.
3. Built With Safety as a Priority
Renault aims to achieve a 5-star safety rating for the new Duster. The SUV’s body structure uses around 57% advanced high-strength steel, which improves structural strength and crash protection.
The SUV will also feature around 12 ADAS (Advanced Driver Assistance Systems). These systems are being tuned specifically for Indian traffic conditions, where driving patterns and road markings can be very different compared to global markets.
4. Wind Tunnel Testing With IIT Kanpur
To improve comfort at highway speeds, Renault tested the Duster in a wind tunnel with help from the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT Kanpur).
This testing focused on reducing wind noise and improving aerodynamics, which should result in a quieter cabin during long highway drives.
5. Engineered for Better Driving Stability
The new Duster has been tuned to deliver better stability and control at higher speeds.
A rear stabiliser bar helps keep the rear axle stable, reducing body roll and improving confidence during quick direction changes. The SUV also uses low-steel brake pads, which provide a stronger initial bite and better heat dissipation during repeated braking.
In addition, the electric power steering system uses a 100A BLDC motor, allowing the steering to stay light in city traffic while remaining stable at highway speeds.
