Shares of Tata Motors slipped up to 1% on September 9, 2025, after its UK subsidiary Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) announced an extension of its production halt following a major cyber incident. The halt will now continue until September 24, 2025, as the company investigates and works on a controlled restart of operations.
On the BSE, Tata Motors shares fell to an intraday low of ₹705, with a market capitalization dropping to ₹2.61 lakh crore. At reporting time, the stock traded 0.38% lower at ₹710 apiece, with a turnover of ₹21.06 crore and about 2.95 lakh shares traded. This reflects the immediate investor reaction to JLR’s extended disruption.

JLR confirmed in a release: “Today we have informed colleagues, suppliers, and partners that we have extended the current pause in our production until Wednesday, 24 September 2025.”
The company explained that the forensic investigation of the cyber incident is still ongoing. A controlled restart of global operations will take time, and production activities remain suspended until then. JLR apologized for the disruption and assured regular updates.
The cyber incident was first disclosed on September 2, 2025, when JLR revealed that its operations had been affected. The company took immediate action by proactively shutting down its systems to contain the impact. Retail and production activities, however, were severely disrupted.
By September 6, 2025, JLR stated it was working around the clock to safely restart operations. On September 9, the company disclosed that some of its data had been stolen during the attack, though it has not revealed full details. JLR promised to notify individuals if their personal data is found compromised.
The cyber incident has forced JLR to carefully plan a phased restart of its global applications. The company emphasized that the process requires time to ensure safe recovery and avoid further risks. The prolonged disruption highlights the growing importance of cybersecurity in the automotive sector, especially for multinational brands.
The incident has caused concern among Tata Motors investors, given JLR’s significant contribution to the group’s global revenues. Market experts suggest that while the short-term impact on stock price is visible, the long-term outcome will depend on the speed of recovery, financial costs of the cyberattack, and confidence in JLR’s data security measures.
Shares fell up to 1% after Jaguar Land Rover extended its production halt until September 24, 2025, due to an ongoing cybersecurity investigation and controlled restart.
Tata Motors touched an intraday low of ₹705 on the BSE, with a market capitalization of ₹2.61 lakh crore before closing slightly higher at ₹710 apiece.
JLR stated that the halt will continue until September 24, 2025, citing a forensic investigation and phased global restart of operations. The company apologized for the disruption.
On September 2, 2025, JLR confirmed a cyber incident had impacted its systems. Immediate actions included proactively shutting down operations to mitigate risks.
As of now, JLR confirmed that some company data was stolen, but it has not disclosed the scale. It assured that affected individuals would be contacted if personal data is compromised.
The long-term impact depends on how quickly JLR restores operations, the costs of the cyberattack, and how effectively it strengthens cybersecurity measures moving forward.
